Syria and Lebanon were called Levant after World War I when the French controlled these territories. ISIS started from a Jordanian militant Islamist, Abu Musab al \u2013 Zarqawi, who first founded al \u2013 Tawhid wal \u2013 Jihad and in 2004 pledged allegiance to al \u2013 Qaeda, a militant Sunni Islamist organization founded by Osama bin Laden. Zarqawi\u2019s group adopted the name al \u2013 Qaeda in Iraq (AQI).
