{"id":22959,"date":"2017-06-28T07:59:35","date_gmt":"2017-06-28T07:59:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/obor-chinas-grand-strategy-for-the-21st-century\/"},"modified":"2026-02-10T01:14:28","modified_gmt":"2026-02-10T01:14:28","slug":"obor-chinas-grand-strategy-for-the-21st-century","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/obor-chinas-grand-strategy-for-the-21st-century\/","title":{"rendered":"OBOR: China\u2019s Grand Strategy for the 21st century"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>By Rafail Voulgarakis and Vasilis Papageorgiou, Analysts KEDISA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The \u201cNew Silk Road\u201d, also known as the \u201cOne Belt, One Road\u201d (OBOR) initiative or <em>Belt and Road Initiative<\/em> (BRI), is a development strategy proposed by China, which aims to foster the economic cooperation and connectivity mostly between Eurasian countries.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> The initiative is named after the \u201cSilk Road\u201d, an ancient route of 6,437 kilometer in length, that dates back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC \u2013 220 AD) and used to connect regions of East Asia with the Middle East and Europe, prospering numerous Eurasian civilizations for centuries.<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> Therefore, with the implementation of the \u201cNew Silk Road\u201d strategy, China aims to revive the 2.000-year-old network by investing on some serious infrastructure projects throughout the whole route, that largely resembles the legendary \u201cSilk Road\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/kedisa.gr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/OBOR-China---s-Grand-Strategy-for-the-21st-century-KEDISA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Read the full analysis in PDF<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\" name=\"_ftn1\">[1]<\/a> National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Commerce of the People&#8217;s Republic of China.
