{"id":22513,"date":"2015-11-11T20:56:27","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T20:56:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/syria-army-breaks-through-year-long-isis-siege-of-key-aleppo-air-base\/"},"modified":"2026-01-21T22:28:57","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T22:28:57","slug":"syria-army-breaks-through-year-long-isis-siege-of-key-aleppo-air-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/syria-army-breaks-through-year-long-isis-siege-of-key-aleppo-air-base\/","title":{"rendered":"Syria army breaks through year-long Isis siege of key Aleppo air base"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Syria\u2019s army broke a more than year-long jihadist siege of a military air base in the country\u2019s north on Tuesday, its first major breakthrough since Russia\u2019s air campaign began.<\/p>\n<p>Troops, backed by pro-government militia, broke through the siege by Islamic State of the Kweyris military airport in northern Aleppo province, a photographer working with AFP said.<\/p>\n<p>A group of soldiers penetrated Isis lines west of the airport and reached government troops inside the base, firing into the air in celebration.<\/p>\n<p>Experts said the base could be used by Russian planes in their air war against rebels fighting the regime of the president, Bashar al-Assad, aiding their efforts to re-take Syria\u2019s second city of Aleppo.<\/p>\n<p>Russia launched airstrikes in Syria in support of Assad at the end of September, but the regime has still struggled to advance against opposition forces and securing Kweyris would mark its first major victory in the province.<\/p>\n<p>But the advance came as at least 22 people were killed in one of the bloodiest mortar attacks on the regime\u2019s coastal bastion of Latakia in the four-year conflict.<\/p>\n<p>As the bloodshed continued, the United Nations peace envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, urged world powers to build on the \u201cmomentum\u201d of new international talks to end the conflict, which has killed more than 250,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty countries and international bodies will meet in Vienna on Saturday to push forward a peace plan for Syria that would include a ceasefire between Assad\u2019s regime and some opposition groups.<\/p>\n<p>The meetings must \u201cbring some deliverables to the Syrian people \u2013 one of them should be reduction of violence\u201d, De Mistura told reporters after briefing the UN security council.<\/p>\n<p>The worst place in the world? Aleppo in ruins after four years of Syria war<br \/>\n Read more<br \/>\n\u201cMy job is to make sure that big countries like the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia and Iran come around the table and come up with a political process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Syria\u2019s state television reported the Kweyris breakthrough against Isis, broadcasting live from outside the airport and saying a \u201clarge number of IS terrorists\u201d were killed, without providing details.<\/p>\n<p>Loyalists and Isis jihadists remained locked in fierce clashes to the airport\u2019s north, east, and west on Tuesday evening, said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Britain-based monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.<\/p>\n<p>Isis surrounded Kweyris in spring 2014, tightening a siege that rebel groups began in April 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The counter-offensive began at the end of September, with support from Russian warplanes, Iranian troops, fighters from Lebanese Shia militia Hezbollah and the pro-government National Defence Forces militia, Abdel Rahman said.<\/p>\n<p>If secured, it could be used by Russian planes flying out of Hmeimim in Latakia province, he said, adding: \u201cIn particular, it will help their efforts to retake all of Aleppo city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia\u2019s air force has been conducting strikes across Syria since 30 September, against what it calls \u201cterrorist targets\u201d in a move that sparked tensions with the western powers.<\/p>\n<p>Moscow says its airstrikes primarily target Isis, though the US and its coalition partners say Russia is mainly attacking more moderate groups fighting Assad.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, US Air Force General Herbert Carlisle said communications with Russia had vastly improved since the start of Moscow\u2019s bombing campaign, with twice-daily talks and a hotline set up.<\/p>\n<p>The regime\u2019s breakthrough against Isis came only hours after one of the deadliest attacks in the conflict in the regime\u2019s seaside stronghold in Latakia.<\/p>\n<p>At least 22 people were killed and 62 wounded in mortar fire on the eastern neighbourhoods of Latakia city, state television reported.<\/p>\n<p>A security source said the attack took place near Latakia\u2019s Tishreen University, where many students were gathered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw blood everywhere and people running in every direction,\u201d said Abir Selman, a 24-year-old literature student, who was waiting for the bus when the mortars struck. \u201cI passed by a corpse that had nothing left except for its legs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One person was killed and five wounded in a mortar attack on residential areas of Damascus, the state broadcaster said, while the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said nine people were also killed in government rocket fire on the flashpoint town of Douma.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, France said on Tuesday it had stepped up its bombing campaign against Isis\u2019s oil infrastructure with new raids in eastern Syria as part of its third wave of strikes under a US-led air campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/nov\/11\/syria-army-breaks-through-year-long-isis-siege-of-key-aleppo-air-base\">www.theguardian.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syria\u2019s army broke a more than year-long jihadist siege of a military air base in&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":23426,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"content-type":"","_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1113],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-22513","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-world-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22513","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/12"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22513"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22513\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":22514,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22513\/revisions\/22514"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/23426"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22513"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22513"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/kedisa.gr\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22513"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
